The world"s first pure battery-powered container ship set sail in Yangzhou on Wednesday. N997, the 10000-ton ship with box type power supply as the main propulsion power source, is also the largest tonnage electric boat project under construction in China. The first batch of green zero carbon pilot ship type is independently designed, developed, and built by China, with independent intellectual property rights.

The ship of 119.8 meters long and 23.6 meters wide ensures that its onboard battery capacity is the largest in the world by being powered by a box type mobile power source for battery replacement and endurance. The entire voyage is propelled by battery power, with a preset battery capacity much higher than the existing domestic ship types, making it a world leader in the number of pure electric container ships, deadweight tons, and battery capacity.

“The construction of this ship has set three records in China, including the first river sea direct handling design, the first new energy ship with maximum battery capacity, and a pure electric container ship with maximum container capacity”, said Qian Tianlong, General Manager Assistant of Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.

The ship is equipped with 36 replaceable container batteries as power sources, equivalent to the carrying capacity of over 800 new energy vehicles.

By adopting a battery swapping mode to achieve full electric navigation, the ship saves 3900kg of fuel per 100 nautical miles so as to have reduced 12.4 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and saved approximately 33500 yuan in energy costs.

Equipped with an intelligent ship system, this series of ships can intelligently adjust energy consumption based on the actual needs of the ship owner based on the arrival time, water flow, battery capacity, and other conditions so that the ship"s speed in different sections can be scientifically planned.
